Our mission is to raise awareness of PANS/PANDAS among carers, sufferers, and physicians through the publication of diagnosis and treatment protocols and information. We envision an Ireland where these conditions are promptly recognized, diagnosed, and treated appropriately to alleviate the immense physical, mental, and social suffering endured by families affected by these disorders.
As these disorders are complex and not fully understood, we use various terms and acronyms, including neuroimmune, immunopsychiatric, PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndromes), PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Strep), and BGE (Basal Ganglia Encephalitis), to name our organizations and describe those we serve. It’s crucial to note that these conditions are not just pediatric problems and can last into adulthood or show the first noticeable symptoms in adulthood. They do not always have an acute onset and are not always caused by an autoimmune response. They can also be caused by an autoinflammatory response. We will also focus on the impact on children, adolescents, and their families while acknowledging that many of those affected remain inadequately treated and become adults and that there are adults who experience an onset and are equally afflicted. It’s time to bring attention to these often misunderstood conditions and ensure those affected receive the care and support they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.
